Islamic State of Africa to appeal decision to reject its political party application

JOHANNESBURG - An organisation that believes Sharia, the Islamic legal system, is the only way to save South Africa will be appealing a decision to reject its application to register as a political party. 

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) rejected the application, saying the Islamic State of Africa (ISA) did not meet the required threshold for signatures to register as a political party. 

In addition, the IEC said it received over 200 objections to the application, with many objectors highlighting that Sharia is inconsistent with the secular values of the country’s Constitution. 

Leader of ISA, Farhad Hoomer, maintained that his organisation was no different to the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), whose constitution is also grounded in religious values. 

“We need change to free our people, to create jobs again. Just this year alone, in the first quarter, there was over 300,000 jobs lost in SA, so the Islamic State of Africa, calling for Sharia Law, is a solution to all of mankind’s problems. We are losing 27,000 lives every year, and it’s increasing just because of alcohol, drugs and casinos.”
