Joburg Council Speaker Arnolds resigns from previous position as finance MMC

JOHANNESBURG - Newly elected Johannesburg Speaker Margaret Arnolds has officially resigned from her previous position as finance MMC.
The African Independent Congress (AIC) councillor was resoundingly elected as Joburg’s new Speaker during a council meeting on Thursday, beating challengers from the Democratic Alliance (DA) and United Democratic Movement (UDM).
This will be Arnold's second stint as Speaker, after she held the position for about nine months between November 2023 and August 2024.
She stepped down from the position to take up the position of finance MMC, which she held until Thursday.
Speaking shortly after her win, Arnolds said that she was proud of her tenure as the city’s political finance head.
"I can definitely say I have achieved in finance, I had a funded budget, I had things that just gone upwards in finance and I think, to me, that was good."
