Sibusiso Ncengwa confessed earlier in June that he participated in Magaqa’s murder in 2017.

JOHANNESBURG - The attorney of a man convicted for the murder of former African National Congress (ANC) Youth League secretary general Sindiso Magaqa said his client has already spent almost a decade behind bars, a factor that should be considered in his sentencing.

Sibusiso Ncengwa confessed earlier in June that he participated in Magaqa’s murder in 2017.

He also implicated a former mayor and manager from the Harry Gwala Municipality and a journalist from news publication Isolezwe.

On Monday, the Pietermaritzburg High Court had its first day of sentencing for Ncengwa.

His attorney, Andrew Matlamela, said his client has already shown remorse by confessing to the crime.

“Even though the accused’s plea was a little moment because he was caught red handed, it counts as something that he did not unduly burden the State with the need to prove the charges and furthermore, tried to show remorse by showing recompense.”
