JOHANNESBURG - In its court papers seeking to suspend the fuel levy increase, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has accused the finance minister of "undermining" parliamentary processes.
On Thursday morning, the EFF filed an application for an urgent interdict at the Western Cape High Court.
The party wants the court to prevent the levy hike, which is due to take effect on 4 June 2025.
As part of his budget speech last week, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana tabled several bills for Parliament to consider.

However, missing from those was the money bill that the EFF, in its court papers, says deals with the imposing of taxes and levies.
The EFF’s national spokesperson, Sinawo Tambo, said that any increases in taxes or levies required parliamentary consent.
"The minister of finance’s announcement does not constitute an increase of the fuel levy, outside of the money bill being introduced and as the EFF, we have written to him on the 26th of May to alert him to this legislative deficiency."
Tambo said that even if the minister were to table the money bill on Thursday, it would not give Parliament and its related committees enough time to process it before 4 June 2025.
