Cape Town Mayor Hill-Lewis survives no-confidence motion tabled against him

CAPE TOWN - Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has survived a motion of no confidence tabled against him.
 
The motion was brought by the National Coloured Congress (NCC) at a special council sitting on Wednesday.
 
The NCC accused the mayor of lacking transparency, spreading false statements about its president, Fadiel Adams, and lying about meeting with the provincial police commissioner to discuss alleged corruption within the municipality, amongst others.
 
However, the majority of councillors voted against the motion, while Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) councillors chose not to take part.
 
Council Speaker Felicity Purchase: "Councillors, thank you. The motion is dropped. Congratulations Mr Mayor, you survived a very difficult time."
  
Hill-Lewis also responded to the outcome of the vote.
 
"Madam Speaker, I just want to say thank you to the EFF for their implicit support in the motion by staying out of it."
