Zulu says Shope wasn't celebrated enough for her contribution in fight against apartheid

JOHANNESBURG - Tributes are pouring in for struggle stalwart Gertrude Shope, who has died at the age of 99.

The African National Congress (ANC) confirmed that Shope died at her Gauteng home on Thursday.

While she served as the ANC Women's League president between 1991 and 1993, she's also known for leading the party's women's section in exile.

ANC NEC member Lindiwe Zulu said Shope wasn’t celebrated enough for her contribution to fighting the apartheid system.

"We easily forget about people who contributed to the struggle, and we easily forget and leave them to their families to take care of them, which is a good thing to do. But we don't keep their names alive as much as we are supposed to."
