BOSA confident budget impasse can be resolved

CAPE TOWN - Build One South Africa (BOSA) is confident the budget impasse can be resolved, with parties finding a workable solution.

But the party said the value-added tax (VAT) increase must be reversed as one of its key conditions to supporting the fiscal framework after the 30-day window.

BOSA held a briefing before Tuesday night's meeting with the African National Congress (ANC) and other parties to try to agree on alternatives to the VAT increase.

While the ANC and Democratic Alliance (DA) continue to differ on the budget with a pending court challenge, BOSA thinks parties inside and outside the Government of National Unity (GNU) can still find each other.

Party leader Mmusi Maimane said they would work with all parties committed to stopping a VAT increase and passing a "workable budget".

"There is an appetite across all parties to find workable solutions. Parties that have remained inside and not become excited about court action, etcetera, these are parties that have committed to working together."

He said the party would put forward its alternatives to the budget, which included freezing all middle and senior management hiring and downsizing Cabinet, among others.

He said the plan would make available more than R120 billion in new revenue over the next three years.
