DA calls for GNU to develop joint foreign relations strategy amid diplomatic fallout with US

JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance (DA) is calling for the Government of National Unity (GNU) to develop a joint foreign relations strategy amid a diplomatic fallout between South Africa and the United States of America.

Some parties within the GNU have accused the African National Congress (ANC) of single-handedly determining the country’s foreign policy without consultation.

While the international relations minister is an ANC member, the DA said that due to the strategic influence of the portfolio, it was important that all parties in the GNU were included in decision-making.

DA international relations spokesperson, Emma Powell, said Cabinet needed to review the country’s foreign policy agenda.

"In light of the critical need to grow our economy and create jobs, South Africa’s foreign policy must now be driven by an unwavering commitment to our country’s domestic growth, rather than being dictated by the African National Congress’s historical and fraternal allegiances."
